Close Viewing; Witness by Peter Weir

The sequence I am going to analyse is when John Book and Rachel are dancing around in the barn. Its is during this scene that we see the theme of romance, which is were the Amish and English world collide.

After John books has been healed by the Amish people, he goes around helping Eli and then starts to fix his car so that he can go back to the English world.  He is helped by Rachel, once they get the car started and the radio turns on they start dancing around the car and singing, until Eli comes and makes him turn it off.

The purpose of this scene is to show that the two worlds have collided and how John and Rachel  have fallen in love with each other. The director was aiming to achieve the idea of love and how the two worlds have clashed. The director achieved this with the clothing that they were wearing and with the lighting given off by the headlights from his car and the gas lamps that are placed on top and in the car so that he can work on the car. in society this can happen where there is a forbidden love whether it is because of race, religion or age so it doesn’t work out.

The type of lighting that is used in this scene is quite romantic, as it is just an oil lamp and the headlights from his car. The lighting in this scene doesn’t change during this scene until Eli comes  to the barn and introduces another oil lamp. This creates a romantic mood between Rachel and John Book as the director has single them out with them being alone in the barn. We learn that the characters John and Rachel have feelings for one another in this scene. The theme from this scene that has been introduced is romance. we as the viewer were affected by this scene as it shows us how the feel about each other, and it gives us strong connection to the two throughout the scene.

The type of music that has been use in this scene “What A Wonderful World” written by Sam Cooke. There was not any sound effects that were used in this scene. From this song we learn that John Book has feelings for Rachel and that they almost kiss few time so it shows that they have strong feelings for one another how ever they cannot be together because of the two different worlds. The music from this extract is one of the main reasons that we find out about the feelings between the two, As it is a love song and John is singing it to Rachel. This music makes the overall mood romantic. This could happen in society when two people are just having fun and then they start to grow feelings for one another.

The types of clothing used in this scene are old fashion clothing, with John Book’s wearing Rachel’s deceased husband. which lets us know that John is willing to take up some of the Amish traditions in order to remain hidden. Costumes that the two are wearing in the scene is important as it shows how the two worlds are colliding with John Book’s in Amish clothing and Rachel dancing around to music from the radio of johns car. Another use of mise-en-scene was the car in the barn, This is a cliche as the Amish refuse to use most new technology. The acting in this scene is important as the director illustrates the idea of romance through the music that is played through the radio from the car.

The first film technique that i have chosen is a wide angle shot, the second film technique i have chosen is a mid shot. The director used the first shot to show us the setting of this scene and the cliche of the car being in the barn being lit up by gas lamps. The second shot is used by the director to show the feelings between the two characters. The theme of romance in this scene is was developed by the lighting given off that is shown in the first shot with the full view of the two dancing, and again the theme is given threw the mid shot of the two dancing.

The first piece of dialogue i have chosen is “i can win your love for me” this is used when John is singing along with the radio to Rachel, the second piece of dialogue i have chosen is “die musik” which is hat Eli say’s when he comes down to find John and Rachel dancing in the barn, this tells us that John is expressing his feelings threw singing and dancing, and Eli real doesn’t want the English to come and change his world. the idea of romance is developed with John and Rachel dancing around and having fun but this is stopped as Eli comes down and puts an end to it.
